Through It All
The debut book from Jacqueline P. Jones
30 Black Women’s Stories on Navigating Workplace Discrimination
This book shares the experiences of Black women from a variety of professions, generations, and geographical locations who have one thing in common, workplace discrimination. The women describe their stories and the various forms of discrimination to which they are exposed, such as tokenism, microaggressions, being silenced, lack of interaction with leadership, and more.
They also share the impact that the discriminatory behavior has had on them and the techniques used to cope with and navigate the racist and biased behavior to which they were exposed. The book also includes strategies for organizational leaders to create more inclusive workplaces, and examples of ways some organizations thrive by creating work environments where their employees feel respected, welcomed, and accepted.
Inspiration Behind the Book
Throughout Jones’ professional career, she observed, experienced, and addressed racist behavior in the workplace. She wrote this book to shed light on the persistent discrimination confronting Black women in work environments. Jones, a self-described “southern girl” also sought to understand if Black women in other regions of the country faced similar discriminatory acts. The book includes stories and strategies used by Black women to cope, navigate, and heal from those negative work experiences.
Jones also hopes her book helps organizational leaders understand the plight and damaging effects of workplace discrimination on Black women, to shed light on the negative impact that discrimination has on their workforce, and to provide ways to create environments where all employees feel a sense of belonging.
